Prosecutors Find No Grounds in 'Election Law Violation' Complaints Against Na Kyung-won
[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] The accusation and complaint cases surrounding former Future United Party (now People Power Party) lawmaker Na Kyung-won during the 21st general election were dismissed by the prosecution one day before the statute of limitations expired.
According to the legal community on the 14th, the Criminal Division 7 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Lee Byung-seok) recently decided not to prosecute former lawmaker Na, who was accused of spreading false information under the Public Official Election Act.
During the election campaign period of the 21st general election in March this year, former lawmaker Na sent text messages to local constituency voters claiming that allegations related to Special Olympics Korea (SOK), where she served as chairperson, were proven to be false.
In response, organizations such as the Minsheng Economic Research Institute filed complaints against former lawmaker Na, stating, "Despite 15 cases of corruption and irregularities related to SOK being detected in the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism audit, false explanations were given."
Previously, these organizations also raised suspicions about former lawmaker Na's daughter's admission irregularities and the hiring of Special Olympics Korea employees, filing complaints against her for obstruction of business and abuse of authority.
The prosecution, as the statute of limitations for the Public Official Election Act violation cases related to the 21st general election ends on the 15th, prioritized concluding the investigation of the election law violation cases and is reportedly continuing to investigate the remaining charges.
