"Building 5G-Based Intelligent Ports" SK Telecom Partners with Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] An intelligent port based on 5G ultra-high-speed mobile communication service will be established.
On the 14th, SK Telecom signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for 'Intelligent Port 5G Testbed Construction Utilization and Cooperation' with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Busan Port Terminal, Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering, and IPTL Project Promotion Group.
The 5G intelligent port is a port that optimizes the flow of logistics automatically and autonomously by collecting and analyzing digital location and status information among cargo, ships, workers, and various logistics resources within the port using the Internet of Things (IoT) based on 5G ultra-high-speed mobile communication service.
Accordingly, SK Telecom and other companies and institutions will actively cooperate in ▲building a 5G intelligent port testbed ▲developing intelligent port operation efficiency and port safety technologies using 5G network infrastructure ▲systematic support for fostering the port software industry ecosystem linked with domestic small and medium-sized enterprises and startups.
SK Telecom plans to actively carry out ▲building 5G network infrastructure and providing 5G communication modules for testing ▲promoting 5G intelligent port strategies and systematically supporting the fostering of a 5G-based port logistics industry ecosystem in cooperation with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
If the 5G-based intelligent port is successfully established, it is expected to secure the competitiveness of the port by providing stable port services with a faster and more rapid automated system and preventing safety accidents. In addition to reducing operating costs, it is expected to have significant economic effects such as creating new markets and new jobs in related industries including system maintenance, automated device operation, and management.
At the MOU signing ceremony, a demonstration of the intelligent port 5G testbed service was also conducted. By comparing the performance of intelligent CCTV solutions and port IoT location sensing solutions in a 5G environment, the future operation and information provision process of the intelligent port in a 5G environment were demonstrated.
Additionally, through demonstrations of drones, body cams, and video radio communication services in the 5G network environment, the feasibility of real-time video security monitoring solutions within the port and real-time communication of work status among port workers was confirmed.
Jung Junho, Head of the Smart Maritime Logistics Promotion Group at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, said, “Through the first government-led port 5G testbed pilot construction in Korea, a cooperative system for fostering and developing the port logistics industry ecosystem has been established,” and added, “We will actively cooperate to maximize synergy by utilizing the human and material resources of each institution.”
