Limited Edition Also 'Sold Out'... Deep Sea Water 'Sangsaeng Kimchi'
Daekyo Group, Gangwon Province, and Goseong County Joint Venture
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daeseop] The 'Kimchi' made by Gangwon Deep Sea Water, a public-private joint venture bottled water company established by Daekyo Group, Gangwon Province, and Goseong County, is attracting attention. As part of business expansion, the company first launched kimchi in 2009 and produces it only for three months a year, yet the cumulative sales volume has surpassed 200,000 kg. If the kimchi packaging boxes (based on 5kg) delivered nationwide were stacked, they would reach 40,000 units.
The kimchi made by Gangwon Deep Sea Water under the 'Cheonnyeondongan' brand is made from napa cabbage grown with deep ocean water at an altitude of 660m in the highland area of Jinburyeong, Gangwon Province. According to the company, only the finest domestic seasoning ingredients supplied from famous production areas are used, such as Yeongyang Taeyangcho chili peppers from Gyeongbuk, Gwangcheon cave fermented shrimp from Chungnam, and garlic from Namhae, Gyeongnam.
Starting this kimchi-making season, in addition to whole cabbage kimchi, they plan to collaborate with Goseong County to produce and sell salted cabbage pickled with deep ocean water. Cheonnyeondongan kimchi production begins every year at the end of October and finishes by the end of December according to order volume. Finished kimchi products are shipped from early November to mid-January but sell out early once the prepared quantity is exhausted. This year, kimchi will be released in early next month.
Daekyo Group, well known as an education and culture company, has diverse business areas including leisure and development, environment and bio, and information technology (IT). It started the deep ocean water business in 2006 by establishing Gangwon Deep Sea Water as a public-private joint venture. They sell various products using deep ocean water, including their main product drinking water, as well as kimchi, salt, rice, and cosmetics.
Gangwon Deep Sea Water draws deep ocean water from 605m below the sea in Goseong, Gangwon. Using a seamless 6km intake pipe, they pump deep ocean water at once, blocking the inflow of pollutants. Gangwon Deep Sea Water renewed the Cheonnyeondongan online shopping mall in the first half of this year and strengthened regular delivery online services. They are targeting sales of 11 billion KRW this year.
