[2020 National Audit] "Regular employees have no problem... Non-regular workers get fired after taking a 1-month sick leave"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] It has been revealed that the Korea Construction Management Corporation's regulation allowing the dismissal of non-regular workers without their consent (disqualification from public office) if they take sick leave for more than one month due to illness, injury, or physical disability has not been corrected despite the Board of Audit and Inspection's (BAI) recommendations.
On the 9th, Lee Jong-bae, a member of the National Assembly's Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee from the People Power Party, announced that after analyzing the BAI audit results, it was confirmed that the Korea Construction Management Corporation ignored the BAI's notification to improve discriminatory regulations against non-regular workers and has yet to amend these discriminatory rules.
The Korea Construction Management Corporation, an affiliate of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, has internal regulations that differentiate sick leave treatment between regular and non-regular workers. While regular workers are not subject to dismissal due to sick leave, non-regular workers can be dismissed if they take sick leave for more than one month due to illness, injury, or physical disability.
Lee pointed out that although the BAI notified the corporation to revise this regulation in December last year, it has not been amended even after nine months. He stated, "Discrimination arising from differences in employment type is clearly an unfair treatment. Efforts should be made not only to address wage issues but also to prioritize practical improvements to unreasonable conditions in the field."
