An 'eco-friendly green parking lot' refers to a future-oriented parking facility designed to preserve the natural environment and harmonize with the natural surroundings within the scope of ensuring user safety and convenience, based on the expansion of urban green spaces.
Existing parking lots constructed with asphalt and other materials hinder water circulation and generate radiant heat, contributing to urban heat island effects and natural disasters, causing serious environmental problems.
Recognizing these issues early on, Jongno-gu has been continuously implementing eco-friendly green parking lot projects since 2010, expanding green spaces in the barren urban parking lots to improve city aesthetics, mitigate heat island effects, and reduce fine dust.
As part of this effort, the newly created eco-friendly green parking lot guideline includes key contents such as ▲the concept and role of eco-friendly green parking lots ▲various creation cases ▲creation plans and detailed matters by parking lot type ▲safety measures, permeable pavement, and recommended planting.
Furthermore, it provides various creation plans and detailed standards tailored to the conditions of each parking lot, such as size, type, and structure, to facilitate easy application not only in public parking lots but also in private parking lots.
In addition, Jongno-gu has created green parking lots by planting trees and installing grass block pavements in 24 public parking lots within the district. The plan is to apply this guideline to future public parking lots under construction to develop eco-friendly green parking lots that preserve the natural environment.
Meanwhile, in December last year, the 'Seoul Special City Jongno-gu Parking Lot Installation and Management Ordinance' was revised to specify the basis for supporting private parking lots that create eco-friendly green parking lots. Going forward, the enforcement regulations will be revised to establish detailed support standards and methods that comply with the Jongno-gu eco-friendly green parking lot guideline.

Mayor Kim Young-jong stated, “The best way to shape a city that matches Jongno’s dignity and alleviate various environmental problems such as heat island effects and fine dust is to fill the spaces around us with greenery. We plan to actively support private parking lots to be developed as eco-friendly green parking lots by utilizing the guideline.” He added, “We will strive to create a clean and breathable, pristine city Jongno based on the expansion of green spaces in the urban area.”
