Musical 'Gentleman's Guide' Revival... Starring Omanseok, Park Euntae, Kim Dongwan, and More
Opening on November 20 at Hongik University Daehakro Art Center Grand Theater
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The musical comedy full of ingenious fun and cheerfulness, Gentleman's Guide: Love and Murder, will return to Korean audiences on November 20th after two years.
The musical Gentleman's Guide is set in early 1900s London, England. The protagonist, Monty Navarro, who has lived in poverty, one day discovers that he is the eighth heir of the noble D'Ysquith family. Monty eliminates the heirs ranked above him one by one to claim the title of Earl of the family. Gentleman's Guide depicts this process in a clever and delightful manner.
Gentleman's Guide: Love and Murder was nominated for 10 categories at the 2014 Tony Awards, winning four including Best Musical, Best Book, Direction, and Costume Design. It also won seven categories including Best Musical at the Drama Desk Awards, four categories at the Outer Critics Circle Awards, and one category at the Drama League Awards, totaling 16 awards and achieving the "Best Musical" Grand Slam across Broadway's three major musical awards. Additionally, it was nominated for Best Musical Theater Album at the Grammy Awards, a rare feat for a musical.
In Korea, it won the Best Supporting Actor at the 2019 Korean Musical Awards, and Best Production and Best Actor at the 2018 Asia Culture Awards. During its Korean premiere in 2018, it attracted a cumulative audience of 63,000 with a 92% seat occupancy rate, an exceptional achievement for a comedy genre musical in the domestic market, setting a new box office record for musical comedies.
The protagonist Monty Navarro will be played by Kim Dong-wan, Park Eun-tae, and Lee Sang-i. Kim Dong-wan has appeared in musicals such as Hedwig, Cyrano, and The Man Who Breaks Walls, and this year made his theatrical debut with Rungs. He recently showed a strong presence in the film Sorikkun. Kim Dong-wan also played Monty in the 2018 Korean premiere of Gentleman's Guide.
Park Eun-tae takes on the challenge of transforming once again with comedic acting. He has mainly played substantial and weighty roles in musicals like Mozart!, Sweeney Todd, and Jekyll & Hyde, and recently received acclaim for his bold transformation into a drag queen in Kinky Boots. Lee Sang-i returns to the musical stage after a long time. He recently appeared as Yoon Jae-seok in the drama Once Again.
Another lead role, D'Ysquith, will be played by Oh Man-seok and Lee Kyu-hyung, who successfully led the premiere, along with new additions Jung Sang-hoon and Choi Jae-rim. The D'Ysquith role is a multirole character that is crucial in bringing out the flavor of Gentleman's Guide. The actor playing this role portrays nine heirs of the D'Ysquith family.
Monty's lover, Sibella Holward, who chooses to marry another noble, will be played again by Lim Hye-young following the premiere, with Kim Ji-woo newly joining as Sibella.
Phoebe D'Ysquith, a member of the D'Ysquith family but not a target of Monty's elimination and instead his muse of love, will be played by Kim Ah-seon and Sunwoo. The mysterious woman and key to the entire story, Miss Shingle, will be played again by Kim Hyun-jin, who also appeared in the premiere.
