A gallery-type outlet refers to a new concept shopping facility that combines cultural and artistic elements with the existing suburban outlets selling domestic and international famous brands' off-season products.
The total area of cultural and artistic facilities in Space One is 36,859㎡ (11,150 pyeong), which is about 70% of the store area selling products (51,365㎡, 15,538 pyeong). This is about six times larger than the average area of cultural and artistic facilities per store (6,611㎡, 2,000 pyeong) in premium outlets operated by Hyundai Department Store.
Space One is a combination of the first letter of "One," which means "shopping and play, art, culture, and experience" and "first and only," implying a space that proposes a high-quality lifestyle including shopping, culture, and art to customers.
A Hyundai Department Store official said, "We are introducing a gallery-type premium outlet where shopping and cultural and artistic experiences are possible simultaneously," adding, "We did not use city or district names for the store name to propose a new experience to customers."
To this end, Hyundai Department Store plans to fill various cultural and artistic contents throughout Space One. First, in collaboration with the world-renowned artist and designer Jaime Hayon, they will present "MOCA Garden," a storytelling-type cultural and artistic space. Jaime Hayon, from Spain, was selected as the "Most Creative Icon" by the American weekly magazine TIME in 2013.
MOCA Garden, with a total area of 1,653㎡ (about 500 pyeong), consists of three facilities: "Jaime Hayon Garden," "MOCA Library," and "MOCA Play." Jaime Hayon Garden is based on the concept of a "sculpture garden that tells stories," featuring eight sculptures designed by Jaime Hayon himself, including dogs and monkeys.
MOCA Library is an art museum that exhibits original picture book illustrations and conducts cultural and artistic education programs, while MOCA Play is a space with playground facilities and murals depicting the evolution of mankind on the walls. The company expects MOCA Garden to provide new experiences and inspiration to visitors.
Artworks by domestic artists will also be installed and exhibited. A large sculpture titled "The Carnivallia 20," 7 meters high and 13 meters long, created by sculptor Shim Jaehyun, will be installed in the outdoor plaza on the first floor. Inside the store, a 5-meter-tall "Star" by installation artist Choi Jung-hwa will be displayed. Hyundai Department Store plans to add more artworks by famous domestic and international artists to Space One in the future.
Hyundai Department Store will also create five gardens inside and outside Space One. The total garden area will be 35,206㎡ (about 10,650 pyeong), roughly the size of five soccer fields (7,140㎡ each). The company plans to hold various cultural events such as outdoor concerts and movie premieres in the large gardens in the future.
