Emphasizes Economic Stimulus and Confirms Commitment to Duties
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] U.S. President Donald Trump, who is hospitalized due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), emphasized stimulus while stating that his physical condition is good.
Despite explanations from his personal physician, as doubts about his health condition continued, he clarified directly and simultaneously urged the Democratic Party to agree on a stimulus bill, showing his determination not to relinquish governance.
On the 3rd (local time), President Trump tweeted directly after a briefing by White House physician Sean Conley about his condition.
President Trump wrote, "Doctors, nurses, everyone at the great Walter Reed Medical Center, and also those who joined from amazing agencies are incredible!" and "With their help, I am in good shape!"
He also claimed, "There has been tremendous progress in the fight against this pandemic over the past six months."
This emphasized that he is personally experiencing that the U.S. government is responding successfully to COVID-19 as he is infected and receiving treatment.
President Trump's tweet is also interpreted as a rebuttal to media reports suggesting his condition is not good despite the physician's briefing.
Contrary to the White House physician's briefing that President Trump's condition is improving, U.S. media such as The New York Times cited White House sources and reported that President Trump's condition is very concerning.
An official said, "The president has not entered a clear path to full recovery." The official predicted, "The president's health was very worrisome over the past 24 hours, and the next 48 hours will be critical."
The New York Times, citing two officials, reported that President Trump experienced respiratory difficulties and a drop in blood oxygen saturation a day earlier. The officials also explained that President Trump received oxygen therapy before being transferred to Walter Reed Hospital.
AP News named White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows as the source of this information.
Physician Conley stated in the briefing that President Trump is currently not using oxygen therapy but did not mention whether he had previously been prescribed it.
President Trump mentioning the passage of a stimulus bill even while hospitalized appears to be a move to dispel concerns about governance. President Trump stated, "Our great America wants and needs stimulus. Let's work together and get it done. Thank you!" This was a call to the Democratic Party to agree on the stimulus bill.
In the U.S. stock market, which closed the day before, the Dow Jones Industrial Average's decline was limited amid concerns about President Trump's COVID-19 infection and the possibility of a stimulus agreement being discussed.
