Captain Lee Geun clarifies debt controversy: "It is true I borrowed money, but I have already repaid it"
[Asia Economy Reporter Hana Na] Lee Geun (36), a former Navy Special Warfare Unit (UDT/SEAL) reserve captain famous for the YouTube content ‘Fake Men,’ directly addressed the controversy surrounding his debt dispute.
Previously, a netizen posted on Instagram claiming that Captain Lee had 'defaulted on a debt,' along with a photo of the civil lawsuit judgment from that time. The netizen stated, "There is someone who borrowed 2 million won in 2014 and did not repay it," and added, "Despite the promised repayment date, he made all sorts of excuses and delayed repayment repeatedly."
As the 'debt controversy' grew, Lee clarified, "I borrowed an amount less than 2 million won and repaid it relatively quickly. Although not all in cash, some of it was repaid through mutual agreement with skydiving equipment and skydiving training. This is a clear fact. I found photos of the equipment I gave and the training I provided at that time."
On the 3rd, through his YouTube channel, Lee explained, "I did borrow less than 2 million won, but repaid it with 1 to 1.5 million won in cash as well as skydiving equipment and training."
Regarding the fact that he lost the lawsuit, Lee said, "At that time, I was working as a training instructor in the United States and was unaware that the lawsuit was ongoing," adding, "After completing my deployment in Iraq and returning to Korea, I received overdue mail from my parents and then learned about the loss, so there was nothing I could do."
Regarding the lack of special measures after losing the case, he said, "I am not well-versed in the law. The case proceeded and the judgment was made while I was abroad, so I could not take any action. Even after returning to Korea, the case was already closed, so I could not do anything," and apologized, "I apologize for not taking prompt action."
According to Lee, the netizen was a subordinate soldier under him when he served as an operations team leader or company commander within the UDT in 2010.
