Chairman Park Yong-man and the 'Van Fleet Award' Received by BTS
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] 'The late former President Kim Dae-jung, former U.S. President George W. Bush, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee, Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Mong-koo, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won......'
These are some of the notable past recipients of the 'Van Fleet Award.' This year, Park Yong-man, representing the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, will receive the Van Fleet Award. BTS, the Korean idol group representing Korea, has also been selected as an awardee.
The Korea Society, a non-profit organization aimed at promoting mutual understanding and cooperation between Korea and the United States, will hold an online gala on the 7th and present the Van Fleet Award to Koreans and Americans who have made significant contributions to strengthening Korea-US friendship.
The Van Fleet Award was established in 1995 to honor General James Van Fleet, who served as commander of the U.S. Eighth Army during the Korean War and founded the Korea Society in 1957. The award is given annually to individuals or organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the Korea-US alliance.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's event will be held remotely. Charles Rangel, former U.S. Congressman, and Salvatore Scalato, President of the New York Korean War Veterans Association, will receive the Van Fleet Award on behalf of Korean War veterans in the United States.
In addition to the veterans, the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry was selected as an awardee in recognition of its contributions to promoting trade and investment between Korea and the U.S. and strengthening cooperation between companies. BTS, as global superstars exerting positive influence, will deliver their acceptance remarks through a special video.
President Moon Jae-in will deliver the keynote speech at this annual event. Kathleen Stephens, Chair of the Korea Society, said, "Under President Moon's leadership, Korea and the United States have continued to enhance their cooperative relationship, renewing trade and security ties and working together to address various issues ranging from North Korea's nuclear program to COVID-19." Chairwoman Stephens added, "Through this, the bond formed between the two countries during the Korean War is being further strengthened."
