[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is expected to have a telephone talk with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the 25th.
On the 22nd, Kyodo News reported, citing Japanese government sources, that Prime Minister Suga is in final coordination to hold a telephone talk with President Xi on the 25th. On the same day in the afternoon, he also held a telephone talk with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
According to the report, the two leaders are expected to confirm their stance on promoting high-level dialogue for the development of bilateral relations during this meeting, and exchange views on the issue of President Xi's state visit to Japan, which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The last telephone talk between the Japanese Prime Minister and the Chinese President was held in May 2018 between former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Xi.
Earlier, Prime Minister Suga held his first telephone talk with a foreign leader, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, on the 20th, just four days after taking office, and about two hours later, he spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump.
After the call with President Trump, Prime Minister Suga told reporters, "Through telephone talks with various heads of state, I want to seek understanding of Japan's position and deepen cooperation."
