Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul's First 'Intangible Cultural Heritage City of the Year' Selected
Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage Seonnong Daeje, Cheongnyong Cultural Festival, etc... Secured 100 Million Won in National Funding
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) has been selected as the ‘2021 Intangible Heritage City of the Year’ by the National Intangible Heritage Center of the Cultural Heritage Administration.
Dongdaemun-gu is the first autonomous district in Seoul to be selected and will receive 100 million KRW in national funding for the project.
The ‘Intangible Heritage City of the Year’ selection project is a public contest promoted by the National Intangible Heritage Center of the Cultural Heritage Administration to encourage the discovery and transmission of local intangible heritage through cooperation with local governments, aiming to foster the self-sustainability of regional intangible heritage.
Representative intangible heritage of Dongdaemun-gu includes ▲ Seonnong Daeje (先農大祭), a ritual dating back to the Silla Dynasty in which the king directly offers sacrifices to the agricultural gods Shinnong and Hoojik to pray for a bountiful harvest ▲ Cheongryong Cultural Festival, an event preserving the tradition of the rain prayer ritual (Giuje) to the Eastern Blue Dragon to wish for rain and abundant crops ▲ and the memorial rites of the Seoul Yakryeongsi Boje-won, which was responsible for treating patients and aiding the poor during the Joseon Dynasty.
The district plans to promote projects such as ▲ cataloging and documenting intangible heritage ▲ publishing an intangible cultural heritage catalog ▲ ‘intangible heritage performances’ linked with local festivals ▲ and humanities lectures and academic seminars.
