Roger Shepard's 'Exploration of the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range in North and South Korea'... Gangbuk-gu Online Humanities Lecture
Scheduled for September 28 on YouTube channel 'History and Culture City Gangbuk-gu'... Stories of the North-South Baekdudaegan Exploration Process and Vivid On-Site Experiences
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangbuk-gu (Mayor Park Kyum-soo) will broadcast an online humanities lecture on YouTube under the theme of "Exploration of the Baekdudaegan in the North and South."
The district completed the pre-recording of the humanities lecture on the 16th.
Roger Shepherd (New Zealand), the lecturer, shared vivid behind-the-scenes stories of the exploration process and on-site experiences of climbing mountains.
The lives of people in both South and North Korea were conveyed through the perspective of his blue eyes.
After the recording, a brief interview followed. When asked why he chose the Baekdudaegan, famous for New Zealand's natural scenery, he said, "I like the folktales and legends each mountain holds, and the stories of the people living there. I want to help the unification and peace of South and North Korea through the mountains."
Roger Shepherd is known as the first foreigner to traverse the southern and northern sections of the Baekdudaegan since the division. He is also the CEO and photographer of "HIKE KOREA," which introduces Korean mountains to Westerners. He has published English guides introducing the Baekdudaegan worldwide.
He began his Baekdudaegan exploration starting with a hike on Jirisan in 2006. After climbing the southern mountains first, he traversed the northern sections in 2011 and 2012. He roamed the vast mountain range that forms the backbone of Korea, from Byeongsabong Peak of Baekdusan to Cheonwangbong Peak of Jirisan.
He has contributed to inter-Korean cultural exchange by exhibiting photos taken during his journey through exhibitions and books. From November last year to February this year, he held a photo exhibition praying for peace on the Korean Peninsula at the Gangbuk-gu Modern History Museum.
His exploration of the Baekdudaegan in the North and South can be viewed on YouTube by searching for "Historical and Cultural City Gangbuk-gu" starting from the 28th.
