KT Takes Lead in Activating National 5G Convergence Service Ecosystem
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] KT announced on the 16th that it will collaborate with the government to establish a 'Nationwide 5th Generation (5G) Convergence Service Testbed.'
This project will be carried out over four years from this year through 2023, with a total budget of 28.5 billion KRW. The goal is to lead the application of the 3GPP international standard and implement a demonstration environment equivalent to KT's commercial 5G network.
Once the 5G testbed environment is established, small and venture companies will be able to research, develop, test, and verify various 5G terminals, devices, and services such as connected cars, drones, smart factories, and media streaming in a 5G network environment.
To reflect the demand of user institutions by region, four bases will be established in Pangyo, Daejeon, Yeongnam, and Honam, and the central node and base sections will be connected through the 'National Future Network Leading Testbed (KOREAN)'.
In addition, to support the rapid implementation of the 'Korean New Deal,' a 5G core network at the same level as the commercial network will be built, including 3.5 GHz and 28 GHz wireless access networks (RAN) and MEC (Multi-Access Edge Computing), enabling swift testing and certification of 5G convergence projects.
Furthermore, for government projects such as the 'Government Network Mobilization Reference Demonstration,' which converts central and local government work networks to 5G, testing and verification of terminals, infrastructure, and convergence services will also be promoted.

Park Yoon-young, President of KT's Enterprise Division and head of the Korean New Deal Cooperation TF, said, "Through the establishment of the nationwide 5G convergence service testbed, KT will create an environment where small and venture companies can freely conduct research and contribute to the activation of the 5G industry. Going forward, KT will actively cooperate by mobilizing ICT capabilities to foster the 5G convergence service ecosystem in Korea."
