Lotte Confectionery Accelerates Eco-Friendly Management with Green Certification Packaging Applied to Margaret Cookies
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Saeng-hye] Lotte Confectionery announced on the 16th that it will apply green-certified packaging to its flagship product, Margaret.
The green-certified packaging applied to Margaret this time is an eco-friendly ethanol-based food packaging manufacturing technology that replaces environmentally toxic substances and reduces harmfulness. It is a packaging method certified as green technology by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Green Certification Office.
To expand eco-friendly packaging, Lotte Confectionery has been collaborating with the Packaging Research Team of the Central Research Institute and Lotte Aluminum since last year to develop the technology. After about a year of research, they jointly developed it and obtained certification in mid-July.
The certified technology will be expanded to Lotte Confectionery’s representative products such as Margaret, Pepero, and Mon Cher.
In addition, Lotte Confectionery recently completed ink reduction work by cutting the printing ink density on gum paper by about half for 10 types of gum products including Juicy Fresh, Watta, and Hurabono. The purpose is to simplify the design for the environment even if it means giving up flamboyance. Since last year, Lotte Confectionery has been continuously working on replacing and reducing harmful solvents in over 160 products (based on SKU), including Pepero, Custard, Choco Pie, and Mon Cher, besides gum. As a result, it is expected to reduce the use of ink and solvents by about 405 tons annually, and the amount of solvents replaced by eco-friendly ink is also expected to exceed 340 tons per year.
Currently, about 130 products have applied the ‘Smart Recycle’ packaging, one of the eco-friendly projects. ‘Smart Recycle’ is a packaging method improved to make recycling easier by allowing the packaging to be easily torn and folded.
