[Asia Economy, Han Jinju] LG Electronics chose to rotate, not fold. The "LG Wing" eliminates the minor inconveniences users experience while watching videos, taking photos, or multitasking, by introducing a rotating screen. This product is the result of a sense of urgency that the smartphone market, stuck in its old ways, can no longer be disrupted by conventional approaches.
On September 14, LG Electronics held a 30-minute event starting at 11:00 p.m. to introduce the LG Wing. This is the first time the company has unveiled a strategic smartphone to a global audience exclusively online, without an offline event. Employees from LG Electronics worldwide presented the strategy and vision of the "Explorer Project," while YouTuber Unbox Therapy shared his first impressions and key specifications of the LG Wing. YouTubers Englishman, Ajiland, and Jack King also shared their experiences with the device through videos. Although specific details such as the launch schedule and price were not announced, the device is expected to be released in Korea in October.
Andrew Coughlin from LG Electronics UK stated, "In recent years, new products have been released with the same design as previous versions, only with slight spec upgrades, which has increased expectations and desire for something new. The 'Explorer Project,' which breaks away from conventional form factors, seeks to embrace risk and pursue new opportunities with a different approach than existing phones with similar appearances and functions."
Rotating 'Swivel Mode'... Comfortable Multitasking with the Second Screen
The LG Wing is a newly designed smartphone with a 6.8-inch main screen and a 3.9-inch second screen that can be rotated 90 degrees to form a T-shape. When switched to "Swivel Mode," the device enables versatile multitasking using the second screen. Users can utilize both screens for a single app or run two apps simultaneously.
YouTuber Unbox Therapy commented, "The swivel action is both sturdy and smooth. The swivel design brings a completely new home screen experience and changes how the smartphone functions. You no longer have to worry about control icons popping up when you touch the screen while watching videos, or about missing important scenes due to incoming messages or calls. The way you hold the phone changes, and the Grip Lock feature allows you to restrict touch input as needed."
Running a single app across both screens allows for easier control. For example, while watching a YouTube video, you can use the second screen to control playback or fast-forward. By using the "Picture in Picture (PIP)" feature in the Naver Whale browser, you can watch a YouTube video on one screen while browsing content lists and writing comments on the second screen.

With the LG Wing, you can rotate the main screen vertically to use it for navigation while selecting music or making calls on the second screen. The "Multi App" feature allows you to set your favorite app combinations and launch two apps on both screens with a single touch.
Unbox Therapy explained, "It's much easier and more convenient to multitask, like browsing the web while watching Netflix or setting a timer while watching a cooking video. You can display photos or videos on the main screen and preview them on the second screen, or even edit videos as if you were using dual monitors."

On the back, there is a triple camera setup with 64MP (wide), 13MP (ultra-wide), and 10MP (ultra-wide) sensors. Despite having two screens, the device weighs only 260g, making it 20g lighter than most foldable phones, and it is designed so that the center of gravity remains balanced even when rotated.
YouTuber Englishman said, "It's sturdy and comfortable to hold, making it convenient to carry. In Swivel Mode, the UX of the second screen stands out, and if you want to use it just as a grip, you can enable Grip Lock mode. While watching YouTube, you can check comments or search for videos, allowing you to multitask without interrupting video playback."

The T-shaped form factor allows for one-handed filming. A gimbal is a device that stabilizes video by moving in the opposite direction of camera shake. With the LG Wing, you can adjust the camera angle using the joystick without moving the phone, shoot steady footage with "Lock Mode," and record horizontally without vertical shake using "Pan Follow Mode."
Using the gimbal motion camera feature, you can adjust the camera angle with the joystick.

To capture the transformation of a paper bicycle into a real bicycle, he used "Lock Mode" to lift the paper bicycle and jump, paused the recording, brought in a real bicycle, and filmed the jump again. After editing, the video showed the paper bicycle magically turning into a real one.
Jack King said, "When you switch to Swivel Mode, the gimbal control features appear, so you don't have to worry about missing the shot while setting up equipment. There's no need to buy heavy gear. The gimbal technology is fully integrated into the smartphone."
Why Did LG Electronics Choose to Rotate... What About Durability?
When the main screen of the LG Wing is rotated 90 degrees, it switches to swivel mode.
View original imageHong Shintae, who was in charge of product planning, explained the reason for choosing the swivel form factor: "We wanted users to experience a multi-screen device without changing their familiar habits, allowing them to maintain their existing user experience and access new usability by swiveling the screen when needed."
Regarding durability in the event of a drop, Hong stated, "We conducted drop tests both with and without the swivel engaged. The device passed certification in 9 categories after being dropped from a height of 1.2 meters at 26 different angles. It also passed over 20 tests simulating various scenarios, including heat, cold, humidity, and dust, meeting military specifications. Water-repellent coating provides waterproofing for everyday use."
Since the device has two displays, LG Electronics made continuous efforts to reduce the overall weight. They used high-strength aluminum alloy materials and employed perforation techniques to reduce weight in areas that do not affect the device's appearance or structural integrity. Kim Ahyun from LG Electronics explained, "To reduce the initial weight of 314g, we minimized the frame thickness using metal alloy materials, utilized perforation techniques and composite lightweight materials to reduce weight by 16.1g, and further minimized the hinge module to save an additional 5.3g. As a result, the LG Wing is the lightest new form factor phone released to date."
