[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Samsung Electronics announced on the 10th that it will hold the "7th Samsung Open Source Conference (SOSCON? Samsung Open Source Conference) 2020" online on the 14th of next month.
The Samsung Open Source Conference is the largest open source conference in Korea, where about 2,000 software developers gather in one place to share information and insights on the latest technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and big data based on open source. It has been held annually since 2014.
This year, the conference will be operated with 7 keynote speeches and 16 sessions, including lectures by renowned open source leaders from home and abroad. Samsung Electronics explained that it will be held online considering the situation caused by the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
At this conference, starting with a greeting from Seunghyun Jun (Sebastian Seung), President of Samsung Research, Seungbeom Choi, Executive Vice President of Samsung Research, will deliver a keynote speech on "The Role of Samsung Electronics Open Source in the Next Normal Era."
Following this, keynote speeches by industry leaders such as Jim Zemlin, Chairman of the Linux Foundation; Danese Cooper, Chairperson of the foundation "InnerSource Commons," which encourages development and collaboration using open source within companies; and Sujeong Kim, head of the Seoul team of the global women developer community "Women Who Code," are also scheduled.
Additionally, Dongyun Jeong (17) and Donghyun Hwang (14), who were grand prize winners of the "Samsung Junior SW Creation Contest," will present their software development experiences as junior software developers.
Outstanding trainees from the 3rd class of the "Samsung Youth SW Academy (SSAFY)," which Samsung Electronics operates for unemployed youth to enhance their employment competitiveness, will also have the opportunity to present at this conference. Open source developers from various industries such as Naver, Microsoft, SK Hynix, and Kakao will participate in technical sessions.
Moreover, the "SOSFest" event, which develops programs using Samsung Electronics' open source and selects outstanding developers, will also be held. Any software developer can participate online.
President Seung said, "I hope this conference will be an opportunity to prepare for the New Normal era after COVID-19 and to think together about problems that require a global response," adding, "We will continue to strengthen exchanges with developers through open source and contribute to expanding the software ecosystem."
