KEPCO completed the country's first 'Green Energy Self-Reliant Island' on Gasa-do Island in Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do Province in 2014 and has been conducting a smart grid project.
After research and development (R&D) since 2012, KEPCO applied microgrid (MG) technology based on the country's first Energy Management System (EMS) to the island.
Additionally, facilities such as a 400kW wind power generator, a 314kW solar power generator, and a 3MWh battery were installed on Gasa-do.
This project is connected to the government's Korean New Deal comprehensive plan policy of 'eco-friendly power supply to island regions.'

A KEPCO Electric Power Research Institute official explained, "At the Gasa-do Energy Self-Reliant Island, we have long demonstrated the background technology to promote renewable energy dissemination technology in island regions and the government's Green New Deal policy. For example, we were able to pre-check situations that could occur when a large amount of renewable energy is supplied from the mainland's large power grid to islands."
KEPCO's Distribution Operation Department is planning to convert 39 islands into eco-friendly power supply models over the next five years.
Among the 42 islands announced in the Korean New Deal, desulfurization facilities will be installed on three islands.
