Gimcheon City Abruptly Cancels National Marathon and Community Sports Competitions

View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] Gimcheon City, Gyeongbuk Province announced on the 7th that it has decided to cancel the '2020 Gimcheon National Marathon' and the '16th Gimcheon City Sports for All Competition' scheduled for the second half of this year, considering concerns over the resurgence of COVID-19.
At a time when the government has issued Level 2 social distancing measures and extended the 2.5-level measures in the metropolitan area as an extraordinary countermeasure, Gimcheon City explained that after careful consideration to prevent the spread of local infections and ensure the safety of participants and citizens, it made the bold decision to cancel both major events.
The Gimcheon National Marathon was successfully held last year with about 4,000 marathoners and citizens participating from across the country.

Mayor Kim Chung-seop emphasized, "There are concerns about the resurgence of COVID-19, and above all, the safety and lives of citizens are the most important, so we have inevitably decided to cancel the events." He added, "Next year, we will do our best to provide a safe environment where citizens can enjoy various sports."
