Goheung-gun Launches Extensive Control Campaign Against Rice Planthopper Outbreak
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Goheung-gun, Jeonnam announced on the 7th that it has set a "Supplementary Pest Control Period for Rice Diseases and Pests" and launched a large-scale pest control campaign to prevent the spread, after conducting patrol inspections mainly in coastal high-risk areas and finding that the population density of rice planthoppers is at a level that raises serious concerns about major damage.
The rice planthoppers, which were introduced from China, move to rice fields entering the heading and ripening stages after heading, multiply and spread through 2 to 3 generations, posing a high risk of secondary damage. Adult and nymph stages mainly inhabit the lower parts of rice stalks in groups, and if not controlled, the damage can rapidly increase.
Accordingly, Goheung-gun urged that through focused control of rice planthoppers until the 11th, following the passage of Typhoon Haishen (No. 10), the occurrence of diseases and pests should be minimized to reduce damage.
A county official emphasized, "Since rice planthoppers are invasive pests, a high density can cause damage even to fields that have already been treated," and advised, "Regularly observe the rice paddies and perform self-control to ensure that pesticides are sufficiently applied to the lower parts of the rice stalks."
