60% of Gyeonggi Residents Say "Punishments for Violating Quarantine Rules Should Be Significantly Strengthened"
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Six out of ten residents in Gyeonggi-do believe that the punishment regulations for violations of COVID-19 quarantine rules should be strengthened.
Gyeonggi-do announced on the 6th that in a COVID-19 related public opinion survey conducted on 1,000 residents on the 29th of last month, 60% of respondents answered that the punishment regulations should be strengthened compared to the current ones when violating COVID-19 quarantine rules.
Only 30% responded that the current regulations are "appropriate."
The current Infectious Disease Prevention Act stipulates fines of up to 10 million KRW for violating self-quarantine, up to 3 million KRW for violating administrative orders to prohibit gatherings, and up to 2 million KRW for violating administrative orders to comply with diagnostic tests.
Regarding the claim for damages against the transmitter in case of infection spread damage, 57% responded that "it is appropriate to hold them responsible for the damage," exceeding half. On the other hand, 39% responded that "it may be an excessive punishment if there is no intent, so it is not appropriate."
When asked whether people are following quarantine rules well after the social distancing level was raised to level 2, 65% answered "they follow well." The answer "do not follow well" was 32%.
Regarding raising social distancing to level 3, 63% were in favor. Opposition was 31%.
Regarding the mask-wearing mandatory administrative order, which was first issued among local governments nationwide by the province on the 18th of last month, 88% (53% strongly, 35% generally) answered "well done."
