The Seongbuk-gu Church Association had proactively decided to hold online (video) worship services voluntarily in February to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and donated 15 million won in sponsorship funds for low-income families, setting a good example in the religious community through their neighborly love sharing campaign.
Even after the first confirmed case at Sarang Jeil Church on August 12, the Seongbuk-gu Church Association held an emergency meeting on August 19 and resolved to suspend all face-to-face gatherings and proceed with online (video) worship services to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The meeting held on September 3 was convened by the Church Association to identify churches having difficulties with non-face-to-face worship and to discuss technical and financial support.
The Seongbuk-gu Zero Face-to-Face Worship Campaign will initially be led by six churches including Seongbok Central Church, which will provide technical equipment and personnel necessary for video worship to small churches struggling with non-face-to-face worship, as well as support monthly rent.
The Seongbuk-gu Church Association stated, “As nationwide efforts are urgently required to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the local community, we are conducting this campaign to provide practical help to small churches in our area. We reflect on the fact that churches have not set a good example in terms of quarantine measures and have rather caused public concern. We will participate in quarantine efforts at a level higher than the government’s request and take the lead in protecting the safety of our neighbors.”
