An Opportunity to Take One More Step Toward Achieving Gender Equality
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) held a commendation ceremony for meritorious persons who contributed to the realization of gender equality on the 1st at the Eunpyeong-gu Office Planning Situation Room (6th floor) to commemorate Gender Equality Week.
'Gender Equality Week' is a commemorative week designated to promote harmonious development between women and men and to foster the realization of a practical gender-equal society in all fields. It is observed annually from July 1 to July 7.
This year, due to the implementation of social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Gender Equality Week was adjusted to September 1 to 7. Considering the difficulty of having many participants in the event, only commendation certificates were awarded to meritorious persons who contributed to the realization of gender equality, without any commemorative or separate side events.
At the event, a total of eight meritorious persons (seven individuals and one organization) were awarded for their contributions to promoting gender equality, expanding women's social participation, protecting women's human rights, and enhancing their rights and interests, including crime prevention targeting women, sexual violence prevention, welfare projects for vulnerable groups, community women's activities, and active promotion of gender equality fund projects.

Kim Mi-kyung, Mayor of Eunpyeong-gu, said, “The significant improvement in women's status and the establishment of a gender-equal culture throughout society are thanks to the continuous efforts of the meritorious persons.” She added, “We will continue to spread a culture of gender equality in daily life through mutual consideration so that no one is discriminated against or marginalized because of their gender, creating a happy Eunpyeong where both genders coexist harmoniously.”
