Kia Motors Sells 216,945 Units in August... Domestic and Overseas Sales Both Decline
Domestic and Overseas Sales Decreased by 11.3% and 3.7% Respectively in August
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] Kia Motors sold 216,945 units globally in August, down 5.2% compared to the same period last year (38,463 units domestically, 178,482 units overseas). Domestic and overseas sales decreased by 11.3% and 3.7%, respectively, compared to the same period last year.
By model, the Sportage was the best-selling vehicle in the global market with 31,288 units sold, followed by the Seltos with 30,714 units and the K5 (Optima) with 18,882 units.
Domestically, 38,463 units were sold last month, down 11.3% year-on-year. Sales declined due to a reduction in supply caused by reorganization work on some lines at the Hwaseong plant.
The best-selling vehicle was the Sorento (6,116 units), marking the first place in Kia’s monthly sales for five consecutive months. Passenger models recorded a total of 14,645 units, including the K5 with 3,944 units, Morning with 3,606 units, Ray with 2,518 units, and K7 with 2,172 units. Recreational vehicles (RVs), including the Sorento, sold a total of 19,770 units, with the Carnival at 5,622 units, Seltos at 3,277 units, and Niro at 1,498 units.
Commercial models sold a total of 4,048 units, including 3,996 units of the Bongo III, combining buses and trucks.
Kia’s overseas sales in August recorded 178,482 units, down 3.7% year-on-year. The Sportage was the top-selling model overseas with 29,816 units, followed by the Seltos with 27,437 units and the K3 (Forte) with 15,835 units.

A Kia Motors official stated, “Although the worsening COVID-19 situation has increased management uncertainties in the second half of the year, we will minimize negative impacts through proactive risk management. We will overcome difficulties by leading with competitive new models such as the 4th generation Carnival launched last month and the Sorento gasoline 2.5 turbo model scheduled for release in the second half.”
