Ulsan Leads Regional Innovation Through Cooperation Between Local Governments and Universities
Ulsan City Holds the '2020 2nd Regional Cooperation Committee' on the 1st... Full-Scale Project Launch from Next Year
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] In Ulsan, a project led by local governments and universities to address regional issues and drive innovation will be actively promoted starting next year.
Ulsan City announced that on the 1st at 4 p.m., it will hold the "2020 2nd Regional Collaboration Committee" related to the "Local Government-University Cooperation-Based Regional Innovation Project" in the situation room on the 7th floor of the city hall main building.
The Regional Collaboration Committee is an organization that deliberates and decides on major matters of the "Local Government-University Cooperation-Based Regional Innovation Project," co-chaired by Ulsan Mayor Song Cheol-ho and Ulsan University President Oh Yeon-cheon, the lead university for this project.
The participating institutions include a total of 18 organizations (with 5 additional institutions added at this meeting): Ulsan City, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), Ulsan University, Korea Electric Power International Nuclear Graduate School, Ulsan College, Korea Polytechnic University Ulsan Campus, Ulsan Technopark, Korea Institute of Industrial Technology Ulsan Headquarters, among others.
Two agenda items will be deliberated and decided at this meeting. The first agenda item is to strengthen cooperation with local companies by adding five regional collaboration committee members, including the president of the Ulsan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the head of the Ulsan Regional Small and Medium Venture Business Administration.
This involves a partial revision of the "Ulsan Regional Innovation Platform Operation Guidelines," mainly to establish a working committee under the Regional Collaboration Committee to enhance practical communication and cooperation.
The second agenda item is the "2021 Project Implementation Plan (draft)," which focuses on reselecting the three core areas proposed in the 2020 project plan (future mobility, eco-friendly energy, genome) into a single core area of "future mobility," which Ulsan's regional universities and innovation institutions can best handle, to maximize synergy effects.
This project will invest a total budget of 214 billion KRW over five years (2021?2025), including 150 billion KRW from the national government and 64 billion KRW from the city government.
A platform will be established to systematically support local innovation activities linked with universities by local governments, universities, and various regional innovation institutions.
Core areas aligned with the region's mid- to long-term development goals will be selected, and universities will reorganize their educational systems linked to these core areas, supporting the execution of tasks in collaboration with regional innovation institutions.
Ulsan Mayor Song Cheol-ho emphasized, "This project is significant as it organically connects tasks jointly derived by industry, academia, and research through a single platform, enabling simultaneous achievement of customized local workforce development and industrial advancement."
