[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Kim Young-seop, president of Pukyong National University (age 65), will step down from his position as president on September 1 after completing an eight-year term. A farewell ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. in the university theater on the Daeyeon Campus.
The farewell ceremony will be attended by fewer than 50 faculty and staff members without inviting any external guests to prevent COVID-19.
President Kim is recognized as Pukyong National University's first reappointed president, having served as the 5th and 6th president, significantly contributing to enhancing the university's competitiveness in education, research, and social service over eight years since 2012.
Under the slogan "Our Path, A New Path," President Kim boldly promoted unprecedented university innovation programs, presenting a new development model for national universities.
Pukyong National University’s "Dragon Valley," developed by opening the entire Yongdang Campus to companies, has been adopted and is being promoted as a policy by the Ministry of Education.
Currently, 350 companies are located there, generating sales of 260 billion KRW, emerging as a cradle of industry-academia cooperation in the southeastern region. The world's first UN FAO World Fisheries University, aimed at assisting developing countries, is currently operating a pilot program ahead of its full establishment.
In particular, President Kim focused on "making a university where students are happy," dedicating efforts to improving the educational environment, including new construction and renovation of school buildings, elevating the Daeyeon Campus to a model of a comfortable and beautiful university campus.
Through selection for top-tier government financial support projects such as the National University Development Project, University Innovation Support Project, Social Customized Industry-Academia Cooperation Leading University (LINC+) Development Project, 4th Industrial Revolution Leading University Support Project, BK21 Project, Humanities Korea Plus Project, and Industry-Academia-Research Complex Development Project, the university enhanced its education and research capabilities.
During his tenure, President Kim also served as chairman of the National Council of Presidents of Public Universities, chairman of the International Maritime Organization Federation, and chairman of the Busan Creative Economy Innovation Center, contributing to higher education and regional development.
In his farewell address, President Kim described the university’s role as a place to ▷learn broadly and inquire deeply through extensive learning (博學) and careful questioning (審問), ▷develop inner strength through prudent thinking (愼思) and clear judgment (明辨), and ▷perfect individual character and benefit society through faithful practice (篤行).
He said, “There is growing social criticism regarding the value of universities focusing solely on knowledge transmission. I urge Pukyong National University to become a splendid protagonist that elevates its identity and value through more intense research, education, and sincere practice.”
