On the afternoon of the 28th, Mayor Lee Yong-seop announced through a COVID-19 online briefing, "We are recruiting the Gwangju Emergency Medical Support Team," and stated, "We earnestly request help from medical professionals holding medical licenses such as doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, clinical pathologists, etc., who are retired, unemployed, on leave, or full-time caregivers and are able to volunteer."
Mayor Lee said, "As the COVID-19 situation enters its eighth month, the fatigue of medical staff and public officials working tirelessly without holidays has accumulated, reducing work efficiency and pushing psychological and physical health to its limits," adding, "Especially recently, confirmed cases have surged, and the number of people requiring diagnostic tests and epidemiological investigations reaches thousands daily, creating an absolute shortage of personnel to carry out these tasks."
He continued, "We ask you to once again demonstrate the spirit of sharing and solidarity of the Gwangju community shown in May 1980," and explained, "The quarantine authorities will support the medical support team to fully utilize their capabilities in the right places and will also provide appropriate compensation."
