Boiling Public Sentiment on Real Estate... Complaints about 'Housing Policy' Increased 6.8 Times in 2 Years
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Over the past two years, nationwide complaints related to 'housing policy' have increased 6.8 times, and complaints related to 'property rights infringement' have also more than doubled.
On the 28th, the office of Lee Young, a member of the United Future Party, announced that an analysis of complaint big data from the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission revealed that the number of complaints with the keyword housing policy increased from 20,014 cases to 138,090 cases (as of August) in two years, a 6.8-fold increase.
The 'Big Data on Complaints at a Glance' operated by the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission publicly provides various complaint statistics and analysis information to the public. The data statistics cover the National Petition System (Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission), Saeol System (over 80 local governments), and Eungdapsso (Seoul City), among others.
According to an analysis using the keyword 'housing policy' in this system, the number of cases by year was 20,014 in 2018, 90,495 in 2019, and 138,090 as of August 27, 2020, representing about a 6.8-fold increase compared to 2018.
In particular, monthly statistics show that related complaints increased to 42,182 cases in June 2020 and 42,439 cases in August 2020, when the Moon Jae-in administration announced the June 17 real estate policy and the August 4 real estate measures, respectively. Complaints in August 2020 increased by a staggering 14.8 times compared to the same month the previous year.
By region, 81.7% were concentrated in Gyeonggi Province and 17.6% in Seoul Special City, mostly in the metropolitan area, and by age group, the 30s and 40s accounted for 62%.
Also, an analysis using the keyword 'property rights infringement' showed an increase from 30,253 cases in 2018 to 68,692 cases as of August 2020, more than doubling. By region, 90% were concentrated in Seoul Special City, and prominent related terms included 'constitutional provisions' and 'disregard for residents.'
The number of complaints searched with the keyword 'land ownership criteria' increased 7,560 times from 6 cases in 2018 to 45,362 cases as of August 2020. A detailed look at the complaints revealed that many were related to official land price standards, including objections to official land prices.

Lee said, "Public sentiment regarding the Moon Jae-in administration's real estate policy is exploding, but the Blue House is turning a deaf ear," adding, "We need to calmly examine why the people are angry. The government must acknowledge policy failures even now and present realistic policy alternatives."
