50% of the Total Population Lives in the Capital Area... Sejong City Shows the Highest Population Growth
Statistics Korea's '2019 Population and Housing Census Results' on the 28th
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] It has been revealed that about half of South Korea's population resides in the Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon areas. However, while the population in the Gyeonggi region is rapidly increasing, the population in Seoul is analyzed to be decreasing.
According to the '2019 Population and Housing Census Results' announced by Statistics Korea on the 28th, the total population residing in South Korea (including foreigners) as of November 1 last year was 51.78 million, an increase of 150,000 (0.3%) compared to the previous year.
Although the total population is increasing, the growth rate has slowed due to low birth rates. According to the 2018 Population and Housing Census results, the total population was 51.63 million, an increase of 210,000 (0.4%) compared to the previous year.
This survey was conducted using a registered census method based on 25 types of administrative data such as resident registration, foreigner registration, and building registers from 14 institutions and over 400 universities as of November 1 last year. It differs from the method where investigators visit households directly.
By gender, there were 25.95 million males and 25.83 million females, each increasing by 70,000 compared to the previous year. The domestic population was 50 million, and the foreign population was 1.78 million.
Nearly half of the total population, 25.89 million (50.0%), was concentrated in Seoul, Incheon, and the Gyeonggi region. This is an increase of 180,000 (0.7%) compared to the previous year.
While Gyeonggi and Incheon increased by 200,000 and 20,000 respectively, Seoul decreased by 30,000.
