Daegu Airfield Relocation Site Finally Confirmed Today
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] The relocation site for Daegu Air Base (K-2) is expected to be finally decided on the joint candidate site of Bian-myeon, Uiseong-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, and Sobo-myeon, Gunwi-gun on the 28th. On this day, the Ministry of National Defense will hold the Daegu Air Base Relocation Site Selection Committee and resolve and announce the joint candidate site 'Uiseong Bian - Gunwi Sobo area' as the relocation site for Daegu Air Base. This comes more than four years after Daegu City submitted the 'Daegu Air Base Relocation Site Selection Proposal' to the Ministry of National Defense in 2016.
On the 3rd of last month, the Ministry of National Defense decided the selection committee and deemed both Gunwi-gun (sole candidate site) and Uiseong Bian - Gunwi Sobo area (joint candidate site) unsuitable as relocation sites. Since then, differences of opinion between Uiseong-gun, Gunwi-gun, and the Ministry of National Defense have not been narrowed.
On the 29th of last month, Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo met with Kim Young-man, Gunwi-gun Governor of Gyeongbuk, but failed to produce results. At that time, Minister Jeong maintained the position that the sole candidate site (Gunwi Ubo) was confirmed as 'unsuitable' through a fair and reasonable process and that this could not be reversed or changed. On the other hand, Governor Kim argued, "Polls cannot be trusted," and said, "If a vote is to be held, the reasons must be specified and both candidate sites must be reconsidered."
Subsequently, Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin and Gyeongbuk Governor Lee Cheol-woo found common ground and announced an agreement on support measures for Uiseong-gun on the 25th. The agreement included incentives such as ▲ placement of military welfare facilities ▲ establishment of an aviation logistics and aviation maintenance industrial complex ▲ creation of an agro-food industry cluster ▲ construction of airport railway and four-lane roads ▲ development of a tourism and cultural complex. For Gunwi-gun, plans included establishing a civilian airport terminal, a government official training facility, and constructing an airport access road. There was also a plan to incorporate Gunwi-gun into Daegu City.
