View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] Typhoon No. 8 'Bavi' is expected to develop into a very strong typhoon as it passes through a high sea surface temperature area. As the typhoon moves northward along the West Sea from the 26th to the 27th, South Korea will be located in the dangerous right semicircle of the typhoon, and very strong winds are expected nationwide.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, as of 3 p.m. on the 25th, the typhoon is moving north-northwest at a speed of 12 km/h about 400 km south-southwest of Seogwipo. The central pressure is 955 hPa, the radius of strong winds is about 370 km, and the maximum wind speed has developed into a strong intensity of 114 km/h.
◆ Moving north along the West Coast after passing through high-temperature waters = The typhoon is expected to pass west of Jeju Island on the afternoon of the 26th and move northward along the West Sea overnight, making landfall near the coast of Hwanghae Province, North Korea, in the early morning of the 27th.
As it enters the sea south of Jeju, it will pass through a high sea surface temperature area around 30 degrees Celsius, receiving a large amount of water vapor, and is expected to become a very strong typhoon. Although its intensity will gradually weaken along the cooler waters of the West Sea, it is expected to maintain very strong strength until just before landfall.
The typhoon is moving northward along the West Sea about 50 to 100 km off the West Coast, and with a radius of strong winds around 420 km, strong winds are expected nationwide. Very strong winds are expected mainly in Jeju and western regions, with Jeju experiencing very strong winds from the night of the 26th to the early morning of the 27th, and the West Coast expecting maximum instantaneous wind speeds of 144 to 216 km/h (40 to 60 m/s) tomorrow and the day after. Seoul, Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, Jeolla, and South Gyeongsang provinces will experience very strong winds with maximum instantaneous wind speeds exceeding 126 km/h (35 m/s).
Wind speeds of 40 to 60 m/s are strong enough to make it impossible for people to walk, and facilities may be blown away or collapse due to the wind. Especially, wind speeds exceeding 50 m/s belong to the highest category, meaning all disasters caused by wind are possible at this speed. The typhoon with the highest recorded maximum instantaneous wind speed was Typhoon Maemi in 2003, reaching 60 m/s.
◆ Similar path typhoons 'Lingling' recorded 6th highest wind speed on record = Typhoons 'Lingling' (2019) and 'Bolaven' (2012), which passed the Korean Peninsula along paths similar to Typhoon Bavi, recorded the 5th and 7th highest daily maximum instantaneous wind speeds on record, respectively, so extra caution is needed. The Korea Meteorological Administration warned, "Due to very strong winds, damage to outdoor screening clinics, construction sites, wind turbines, transmission towers, and secondary damage caused by flying debris is possible, as well as damage to crops such as fruit drop. Coastal areas, large bridges installed at high altitudes, and island regions may experience even stronger winds, so special attention is required."
As rain clouds accompanying the typhoon move northward, rain is falling in Jeju and the southern coast, and rain is expected nationwide tomorrow, continuing until the day after tomorrow. The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts very heavy rainfall of up to 300 mm in Jeju, Jeolla, and around Jirisan, and up to 150 mm in the southern coast of Gyeongnam and the western inland of Gyeongbuk.
