Jeju Coast Guard Intensifies Crackdown on Marine Safety Violators
Special Crackdown by Marine Police Station Task Force during Summer and Autumn Holiday Seasons
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Regional Maritime Police Agency (Chief Kim Seongjong) announced that it will conduct a special crackdown on marine safety violation offenders from September 1 to November 30, following a pre-crackdown announcement and promotion period from August 24 to 31.
The main targets of the special crackdown are ▽ illegal alteration and extension of vessels ▽ impairment of stability ▽ violation of securing guidelines ▽ overloading and overboarding ▽ violation of crew standards ▽ fishing vessels operating outside territorial waters, etc.
This special crackdown is aimed at preventing safety accidents during the summer and autumn leisure seasons when vessel usage is high. The Jeju Regional Maritime Police Agency plans to operate dedicated teams at each maritime police station and conduct comprehensive crackdowns on sea and land using patrol vessels, criminal mobile boats, and police substations.
A Jeju Maritime Police Agency official stated, “Safety violation acts occurring at sea have a high risk of leading to large-scale casualties,” and added, “Marine safety violation offenders will be actively cracked down through cooperation not only with the maritime police but also with related agencies to do our best to prevent marine safety accidents.”

Meanwhile, the Jeju Maritime Police Agency conducted two rounds of crackdowns on marine safety violation offenders in the first and second halves of 2019, cracking down on a total of 59 cases involving 75 people, including 7 cases of overloading and overboarding involving 13 people, 4 cases of unlicensed operation involving 4 people, and 4 cases of failure to undergo vessel safety inspections involving 5 people.
