Yongin City Introduces Mosquito Forecast System
[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province has introduced a mosquito forecasting system.
Yongin City announced on the 21st that it has introduced the mosquito forecasting system to prepare for diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and has been providing the service through the Smart Yongin website (http://u.yongin.go.kr) since the 19th.
The mosquito forecasting system collects mosquitoes from seven key locations within the city, analyzes the data, and reflects environmental factors to inform the city's mosquito occurrence prediction index, along with guidance on citizen behavior and control methods accordingly.
The forecast is divided into four stages: ▲ Level 1 (Comfortable), where mosquito activity is very low or almost none ▲ Level 2 (Attention), where outdoor mosquito habitats begin to appear ▲ Level 3 (Caution), where outdoor mosquito activity is frequently observed ▲ Level 4 (Unpleasant), where many outdoor mosquito habitats are distributed.
A city official explained, "We expect to prevent mosquito-borne diseases and conduct proactive pest control using the mosquito occurrence prediction index."
The mosquito forecasting system was established with the participation of Yongin City in the national project "Development of Mosquito Activity Index in the Metropolitan Area Using Meteorological Data and GIS" by the Korea Meteorological Administration.

The city plans to continuously advance the prediction algorithm and build data such as mosquito activity prediction indices for unobserved locations.
