Jeonnam Province Launches Full-Scale Operation of 'Hydrogen Charging Stations'... Starting Popularization
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province announced on the 20th that the Hynet SPG Yeosu Hydrogen Charging Station has opened in the Yeosu Industrial Complex and has begun full-scale operation.
The Hynet SPG Yeosu Hydrogen Charging Station holds special significance as a symbolic station marking Jeonnam region's entry into the full-fledged hydrogen vehicle era and the opening of the hydrogen economy.
Hynet invested a total of 3 billion KRW, receiving 1.5 billion KRW in national funding, and the charging station is equipped with Korea's first one-stop charging system that supplies hydrogen produced by SPG Chemical Co., Ltd. directly for charging.
It can charge 28 kg per hour, which is enough capacity to charge five hydrogen passenger cars. The station operates from Monday to Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Jeonnam Province plans to expand a total of 22 hydrogen charging stations, the representative infrastructure of the hydrogen economy, by 2030, starting with the already established Jangseong Rest Area and the newly established Yeosu station. Next year, four stations will be built in Gwangyang, Hampyeong, and other locations, and by the end of next year, it is expected to have a total of six hydrogen charging stations.
Along with expanding hydrogen infrastructure, Jeonnam plans to supply 11,000 hydrogen vehicles by 2030, including 108 hydrogen passenger cars scheduled for distribution this year.
In line with the government’s ‘Hydrogen Economy Activation Roadmap,’ Jeonnam Province is fostering hydrogen as a future growth industry by creating a regional green hydrogen industry ecosystem based on by-product hydrogen production capacity and offshore wind power potential, aiming to develop Jeonnam as the center of South Korea’s hydrogen economy.
Additionally, to reduce pollutants from old diesel vehicles, the main cause of air pollution in the transportation sector, Jeonnam has been implementing the ‘Early Retirement Program for Grade 5 Emission Diesel Vehicles’ since 2017 to phase out old diesel vehicles early and plans to replace them mainly with eco-friendly vehicles such as hydrogen and electric cars.
Park Hyunsik, Director of the Environment and Forestry Bureau of Jeonnam Province, said, “The operation of the Hynet SPG Yeosu Hydrogen Charging Station will enhance the convenience of hydrogen electric vehicle users in the province and serve as an opportunity to expand their distribution. We will continue to expand hydrogen infrastructure to create a clean environment free from fine dust and do our best to lead the transition to a hydrogen society.”
Meanwhile, there are currently a total of 37 hydrogen charging stations established nationwide, with Ulsan having the most at six stations, followed by Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Gyeongnam with four each, Gwangju and Chungbuk with three each, and Jeonnam, Jeonbuk, and Busan with two each.
