Trailblazer Pulling, Traverse Pushing... Korea GM's 'Two-Track Strategy' Success
Strong Domestic Sales of Trailblazer Secure 2nd Place Among Small SUVs
Traverse and Colorado Perform Well in Korea's Imported Car Market
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] Chevrolet's 'two-track' strategy, which bridges the gap by introducing imported models that have received favorable reviews overseas while developing new cars domestically, is showing results.
According to Korea GM on the 19th, last month Korea GM sold 6,988 units in the domestic market, ranking third among the five domestic automakers. This is the first time in 29 months since January 2018 that Korea GM has ranked third in the domestic market. It is explained that while preparing future growth by conducting research, development, and production of the Trailblazer and next-generation crossover utility vehicle (CUV) models allocated by global GM, the introduction of globally popular models has strengthened the brand identity.
Along with strong sales of the Trailblazer launched earlier this year, the Traverse and Colorado performed well in the imported car market, leading to good results. First, the Trailblazer ranked second in sales in the domestic subcompact small sport utility vehicle (SUV) market in July, following Kia's Seltos. Sales in June and July alone reached 5,531 units. Recently, exports to the United States have also picked up, with cumulative exports approaching 70,000 units as of July.
The reasons for the favorable reviews include three designs that consider various lifestyles and a spacious interior realized with a subcompact body size. The new powertrain, which combines performance and efficiency, is also receiving positive evaluations.
Additionally, the Traverse and Colorado have firmly supported the lineup and successfully settled in the imported car market. In the imported car market dominated by 4-cylinder 2000cc sedans and SUVs, these models with a 3600cc large displacement engine and a large SUV with a length of 5.2 meters ranked high in sales. According to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA), 427 units of the Traverse were registered in July. From January to July this year, a total of 2,657 units of the Traverse were registered.

Including the Traverse and Colorado, Chevrolet currently imports and sells a total of six models: Bolt EV, Camaro SS, Equinox, and others. These account for about 67% of the models sold by Korea GM. However, in terms of sales volume, domestically produced models such as the Spark and Trailblazer remain dominant. Especially since about 80% of production at the Bupyeong plant is exported, domestic production models are expected to play a key role in business normalization through a return to profitability.
