KEPCO and Gyeongsangbuk-do Promote Development of Eco-Friendly Livestock Manure Power Generation Technology
Operation of Combined Heat and Power Testbed Using Livestock Manure
Gyeongbuk Develops Solid Fuel from Livestock Manure
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) announced on the 19th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Gyeongsangbuk-do Province at the Gyeongbuk Provincial Office in Andong City, Gyeongsangbuk-do, to collaborate on developing technology that produces energy using livestock manure and processes manure in an eco-friendly manner.
Through this MOU, KEPCO will operate a combined heat and power (CHP) testbed that produces electricity and heat for heating using solid fuel made from livestock manure. Gyeongsangbuk-do will promote the development of technology to convert livestock manure into fuel.
A budget of 4 billion KRW will be invested over three years starting this year for the research project. Joint research institutions include KEPCO Electric Power Research Institute, Gyeongsangbuk-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, and Gyeongsangbuk-do Livestock Research Institute.
KEPCO and Gyeongsangbuk-do expect to produce 360,000 tons of solid fuel annually using 1.35 million tons of livestock manure from farms within the province through the joint research project. This is also expected to contribute to improving environmental issues caused by livestock manure and will be expanded nationwide in the future.
More than 8 million tons of livestock manure are generated annually in Gyeongsangbuk-do. Since the composting method for livestock manure treatment has limitations in resolving odor, water pollution, and livestock infectious diseases, the province established the "Paradigm Shift Measures for Livestock Manure Treatment" in January.
Projects to foster the livestock manure solid fuel industry are also underway.

KEPCO possesses combined heat and power generation technology that supplies heat and electricity, as well as technology to reduce harmful substances in exhaust gases generated during power generation. It is expected that these technologies will be utilized to use solid fuel made from livestock manure in an environmentally friendly way.
