Germany's Daily COVID-19 Cases Near 1,700, Highest in 4 Months
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is wearing a preventive mask against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) during the final roundtable meeting of the four-day European Union (EU) summit held in Brussels, Belgium, on the 21st of last month (local time).
Germany has reported the highest number of daily new COVID-19 cases in nearly four months.
According to Worldometer, a real-time international statistics site, Germany recorded 1,689 new COVID-19 cases on the 17th (local time), the highest since April 24, when there were 1,870 cases.
In Germany, daily new cases reached nearly 7,000 at the end of March and early April. After peaking, the numbers gradually decreased to a few hundred per day but have recently started to rise again.
On the same day, German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed concern about the increase in infections at a Christian Democratic Union (CDU) meeting held in Berlin, stating that "while the situation is manageable, there is currently no room to ease restrictions," according to major foreign media.
Meanwhile, amid growing concerns about the resurgence of COVID-19, the German government recently designated Spain as a COVID-19 risk area.
