Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Election Commission to Share Election Experiences with Latin America through the Organization of American States on the 19th
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with the National Election Commission, plans to share South Korea's experience in conducting general elections under the COVID-19 situation, including the election quarantine system, through a video conference with the Organization of American States (OAS) on the morning of the 19th, the 18th reported.
The OAS is a regional organization established in 1948 to enhance solidarity and cooperation among countries in the Americas. It consists of a total of 35 member states, including 33 countries in Latin America, the United States, and Canada. South Korea has been participating as a permanent observer since 1981.
The OAS has dispatched election observation missions to more than 240 elections held in 27 member countries and has conducted election monitoring activities. To improve the election systems of member countries, it has continuously carried out regional cooperation projects in the election field, such as improving voter registration systems and revising related laws and regulations.
This meeting was arranged following a request from the OAS after they listened to South Korea's experience in conducting the 21st general election during a special permanent observer video conference held on June 10.
The video conference, led by Director Hwang Kyung-tae of the Latin America and Caribbean Affairs Bureau, will proceed with an explanation by National Election Commission officials on managing the general election amid the COVID-19 situation, followed by questions from the OAS side and answers from the Korean side. Through this meeting, ways to utilize South Korea's experience in Latin American countries will be explored together.
