Hwasun-gun to Hold 'Emergency Temporary General Meeting of Market and County Governors Association of Abandoned Mine Areas' on the 18th
7 Local Government Heads Attend... Seeking Measures to Oppose Korea Mining Corporation Act Bill
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Young-gyun] Hwasun County, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gu Chung-gon) announced on the 17th that it will hold the "National Closed Mine Area Mayors and County Governors Administrative Council (hereinafter referred to as the Council) Extraordinary General Meeting" at 2 p.m. on the 18th in the county office's main conference room.
This extraordinary general meeting is being held to establish measures related to the "Korea Mining Corporation Act" which was primarily proposed by Assemblyman Lee Jang-seop in June, and to discuss joint actions of the seven cities and counties in the closed mine areas going forward.
Attendees are expected to include Gu Chung-gon, Hwasun County Governor and president of the council, Ryu Tae-ho, Mayor of Taebaek, Kim Yang-ho, Mayor of Samcheok, Choi Seung-jun, County Governor of Jeongseon, Kim Dong-il, Mayor of Boryeong, Go Yoon-hwan, Mayor of Mungyeong, and Kim Ki-cheol, Deputy County Governor of Yeongwol.
The "Korea Mining Corporation Act" is a bill aimed at integrating the Korea Mine Reclamation Corporation and the Korea Resources Corporation, and was submitted to the National Assembly's standing committee on the 28th of last month.
The council issued a statement on the 4th strongly opposing the integration of the Mine Reclamation Corporation and the Resources Corporation and urging the bill's rejection.
The statement pointed out that since both the Korea Resources Corporation and the Korea Mine Reclamation Corporation have been in a state of capital erosion since 2016, their integration would inevitably lead to mutual insolvency, and the resulting damage would be borne entirely by the residents of the closed mine areas.
