Lee Nak-yeon: "The Rise and Fall of Presidential Candidate Support Rates Are Not What Matters"
[Asia Economy Reporter Wondara] Lee Nak-yeon, a candidate for the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, commented on falling behind Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung for the first time in the next presidential election candidate approval rating survey, saying, "The rise and fall of presidential candidate approval ratings are not important."
On the afternoon of the 14th, Lee said in a statement, "I believe the accumulated disappointment and frustration of the people regarding various issues also apply to me," adding, "The rise and fall of the next presidential candidate approval ratings are not important."
He continued, "Now is the time to reflect on whether the government and ruling party, including myself, have been humble, competent, and trustworthy," and said, "As a candidate running for party leader, I feel a special sense of responsibility. I will start by reflecting on myself." He also said, "I hope the party convention on the 29th will be an opportunity to establish new leadership that can approach the lives and hearts of the people more attentively."
After attending a seminar held at the National Assembly that morning, Lee also told reporters, "Public sentiment is always moving."
Meanwhile, according to a public opinion poll on the next presidential candidate approval rating conducted by Gallup Korea (survey conducted from the 11th to the 13th targeting 1,001 people aged 18 and over, with a margin of error of ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level), 19% of respondents answered that Governor Lee Jae-myung was the preferred next president. Lee Nak-yeon was recorded at 17%.

Governor Lee did not comment on the presidential candidate approval ratings except for issues such as the COVID-19 situation in the province and the separate ban on short selling on that day.
