The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC) announced on the 11th that the OECD Economic Development Review Committee (OECD EDRC) highly praised the South Korean government's measures to combat corruption in its Korea Economic Report.
The OECD publishes an economic report every two years that reviews the economic conditions and policies of member countries and suggests policy directions.
An ACRC official emphasized, "The report specifically mentioned that the ACRC played a particularly significant role in nearly eliminating corruption among lower-level public officials."
The report stated, "Recently, many presidential pardons for politicians, business leaders, and public officials involved in corruption were denied," and evaluated that "the passage of the Act on the Establishment and Operation of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) in the National Assembly is also a meaningful measure."
According to the report, South Korea has shown an upward trend in the Corruption Perceptions Index by Transparency International and the Control of Corruption Index by the World Bank over the past three years.
The report mentioned key improvements such as strengthening whistleblower protection through amendments to the Act on the Prevention of Corruption and the Establishment and Management of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, including provisions to prevent conflicts of interest in the Code of Conduct for Public Officials, and enacting the Public Finance Recovery Act.
