India Reports 55,000 New COVID-19 Cases in a Day... "Highest for Two Consecutive Days"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] India’s daily new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) exceeded 55,000, setting a record high for the second consecutive day.
According to The Times of India on the 31st, India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced that the country’s cumulative COVID-19 cases reached 1,638,870, an increase of 55,078 from the previous day. This is the first time India’s daily new confirmed cases have surpassed 55,000. The daily new cases exceeded 50,000 for the first time on the 30th, setting a record high for two consecutive days. Until the end of last month, daily new cases were below 20,000, but they have tripled in just one month.
By region, the spread was notable in major provincial cities such as Pune near Mumbai, the largest economic city, and Bengaluru in the south, as well as smaller cities in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. Pune and Bengaluru recorded 3,309 and 2,233 new cases respectively. Andhra Pradesh reported more than 10,000 new infections for two consecutive days. The capital New Delhi and Mumbai recorded 1,093 and 1,208 cases respectively.
According to international statistics sites, India ranks third in cumulative COVID-19 cases after the United States and Brazil. Since lifting lockdown measures related to COVID-19 containment from May, confirmed cases have surged. However, the Indian government plans to further ease controls through the third phase of lockdown lifting measures starting next month to revitalize the economy. Nighttime curfews will be lifted, and gyms and yoga centers will reopen under compliance with standard operating guidelines.
