The sequels to the movie 'Myeongryang' will be filmed in Jeonnam
Jeonnam Province, Yeosu City - Big Stone Pictures Co., Ltd. Sign Production Support Agreement for 'Hansan' and 'Noryang'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Following ‘Myeongryang,’ which recorded the highest box office in Korean film history with 18 million viewers, the sequels ‘Hansan’ and ‘Noryang’ will also be filmed in Jeollanam-do.
On the 30th, Jeollanam-do announced that Governor Kim Young-rok, Yeosu Mayor Kwon Oh-bong, and film director Kim Han-min attended and signed a business agreement for production support and promotion of Jeollanam-do.
As films based on Admiral Yi Sun-sin are being produced one after another in Jeollanam-do, including Yeosu, it is expected to shed new light on Jeollanam-do’s righteous history and the sacrifices of ancestors, serving as a great opportunity to widely promote Jeollanam-do as a patriotic tourism destination.
The film ‘Hansan: Sea of the Dragon,’ produced by Big Stone Pictures Co., Ltd., will depict the great victory of Admiral Yi Sun-sin and the Joseon navy who turned the tide of war despite overwhelming odds, while ‘Noryang: Sea of Death’ will capture Admiral Yi’s loyalty as he faced life and death in the winter waters off Noryang.
Filming for ‘Hansan’ will begin in June, and for ‘Noryang’ in December, with releases scheduled for July and December next year, respectively.
According to the agreement, Jeollanam-do will provide 500 million KRW for the construction of open and indoor sets, and Yeosu City will support 800 million KRW as film production incentives for regional economic revitalization and promotion.
The production company Big Stone Pictures Co., Ltd. will actively promote Jeollanam-do and stimulate the local economy by ▲filming and holding special screenings in Jeollanam-do ▲using the ‘Jeollanam-do’ logo in posters and various advertisements ▲actively utilizing Jeollanam-do’s materials and manpower during the filming period.
Additionally, Big Stone Pictures plans to invest 5.5 billion KRW to build a large-scale film shooting site on a 60,000㎡ site in Jinnam District, Yeosu, recreating the naval base of the Joseon navy, including Jinnamgwan and Unjudang residence, as realistically as possible.
Historical resources from eight cities and counties in the province, including Geumsungsanseong Fortress in Damyang, Jangdo in Wando, and Suncheon Waeseong Fortress, will also be used as filming locations, expected to bring renewed attention to Jeollanam-do’s patriotic tourism sites.
Governor Kim Young-rok of Jeollanam-do said, “Along with 2 million residents, I welcome Director Kim Han-min filming the sequels ‘Hansan’ and ‘Noryang’ of the film ‘Myeongryang’ in Jeollanam-do. If the brilliant victories of Admiral Yi Sun-sin in the Battle of Hansan and the Battle of Noryang are recreated, it will satisfy the cultural needs of people exhausted by COVID-19 and could become a globally acclaimed masterpiece with great popularity.”
