Japan's Export Restriction Measures WTO Dispute Intensifies... Panel Installation Confirmed
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] A World Trade Organization (WTO) panel to address Japan's export restrictions will be formed. Legal disputes between Korea and Japan are expected to intensify.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, at the WTO Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) regular meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland on the 29th, a panel was established for the dispute over Japan's export restriction measures at the request of the Korean government.
Japan opposed the establishment of the panel, as it did at the DSB meeting held on the 29th of last month. However, according to WTO agreements, the panel was automatically established at this meeting.
The establishment of the panel is the procedure to set up a tribunal responsible for dispute hearings. After the panel is established, the selection of panel members, written submissions, oral hearings, and other dispute procedures will proceed in earnest.
In principle, it takes 10 to 13 months from the establishment of the panel to the announcement of the panel's final ruling. However, the actual period may be shortened or delayed depending on the dispute.
