Support for Production of Three National Theater Company Plays Canceled Due to COVID-19
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The National Theater Company of Korea announced the results of the 'Theater Exists Again' contest on the 28th, which was conducted to support the theater industry struggling due to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
'Theater Exists Again' is a program that selects three plays whose performances were canceled in the first half of this year due to COVID-19, and supports them with production costs, venues, and promotional marketing by the National Theater Company, allowing them to be staged again and giving all ticket sales revenue to the theater companies.
The National Theater Company accepted applications for 'Theater Exists Again' from June 17 to July 7 and selected three works out of 28 submissions.
The selected works are 'Eighteen Adults' (written by Park Doryeong, adapted and directed by Yuna Young) by Theater Company Tokkiga Saneun Dal, 'Somewhere on the Other Side of This World' (written by Annie Baker, translated and directed by Kim Han-nae) by the 12th Language Theater Studio, and 'Crocodile Poem' (written and directed by Shin Haeyeon) by Project C. These plays are scheduled to be performed for two weeks each at the National Theater Company's small theater Pan from November to December this year.
The selection committee consisted of seven members: critic Noh I-jeong, dramaturg Ma Jeong-hwa, artistic director of the National Theater Company Lee Seong-ryeol, planner Lee Hee-jin, writer Jang Seong-hee, director Jo Gwang-hwa, and Seoul Theater Association president Ji Chun-seong. They selected the three works based on criteria such as alignment with the project’s purpose and feasibility, possibility of performance, and the thoroughness and rationality of the performance plans.
