[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] KOICA announced on the 28th that it delivered supplies to Bangladeshi nurses and vulnerable residents in the Mukda area of Dhaka city to respond to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
This support was promoted as part of post-management of the Bangladesh Nursing Graduate School established by KOICA with support from the Korean government, and as part of the Bangladesh government's COVID-19 response support. The total amount is approximately 400,000 USD.
Bangladesh, located in South Asia, had about 220,000 cumulative confirmed COVID-19 cases as of the 27th. In particular, due to a lack of basic medical supplies, facilities, and capacity, the country is facing comprehensive difficulties in responding to COVID-19. As a result, over 3,000 medical personnel, including about 900 nurses, have been infected with COVID-19, recording the highest doctor mortality rate in the world.
KOICA is providing 3,000 sets of medical supplies including protective suits, masks, and gloves for frontline nurses, as well as essential food items such as rice and hygiene products like hand sanitizers and antibacterial soap to 1,800 households in the Mukda area near the Nursing Graduate School. The Mukda area is home to many low-income and vulnerable groups within Dhaka city.
Since 2012 until last year, KOICA established Bangladesh's only Nursing Graduate School and supported educational infrastructure, curriculum, and operations. Through this, KOICA transferred world-class Korean nursing workforce capabilities and related technologies to improve the nursing workforce situation in Bangladesh, which suffers from a shortage of nurses and faculty members.
Lee Jang-geun, Ambassador to Bangladesh, stated, "We hope this medical supplies support will contribute to protecting medical personnel and citizens working on the front lines of Bangladesh's COVID-19 response."
