One-Way Traffic from Seongrimsa to Seongseo Elementary School Direction in Mapo-gu
One-Way Traffic on 200m Section from Seongrimsa to Seongseo Elementary School Direction on World Cup Buk-ro 15an-gil Starting August 1... Preventing Accidents in Steep, Narrow Road within Child Protection Zone
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) will implement one-way traffic from August 1st on a section of about 200 meters from Seongsan 1-dong World Cup Buk-ro 15 An-gil, Seongrimsa to Seongseo Elementary School direction.
This measure aims to reduce accidents in the school zone, which is a children's commuting route. The section has a steep slope and narrow road width, making two-way vehicle traffic difficult and raising concerns about the safety of commuting children and pedestrians.
Accordingly, the district conducted a traffic volume survey in November last year, collected residents' opinions in December, and after the Mapo Police Station's traffic facility review in April this year, approval from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency in May, and completion of Seoul city design in July, traffic safety facilities such as road surface markings and traffic safety signs have been installed in the section.
A district official stated, "This section is a children's protection zone, and according to the so-called Min-sik Act (amended Road Traffic Act and Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes), children's safety must be prioritized. Since vehicle traffic tends to concentrate in one direction in this section, one-way traffic was promoted with approval from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency to prevent traffic accident risks not only for commuting children but also for local residents and road users."
The district has also started maintenance work on roads under Mapo-gu jurisdiction in accordance with the 'Safe Speed 5030 Project.'
The 'Safe Speed 5030 Project' is a policy to protect vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and reduce fatalities in accidents by lowering the speed limit on urban roads to 50 km/h and on side roads and special protection areas such as school zones to 30 km/h.
Following the enforcement of the amended Road Traffic Act Enforcement Rules in April last year, Seoul City, the Police Agency, and each autonomous district are jointly carrying out maintenance projects on target roads, including installing and removing safety facilities such as road surface markings and traffic safety signs.
