Kim Daljin Art Museum, Revisiting Contemporary Art Through Posters
From August 3, 'Left Behind, Art, Written, Poster' Exhibition... Over 60 Posters from the 1960s On Display
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The Kim Daljin Art Archive Museum will hold the exhibition "Left Behind, Art, To Be Written, Poster" from August 3 to October 24.
This exhibition will showcase over 60 posters created since the 1960s. The exhibition was planned based on the idea that although the original practical purpose of posters disappears after the exhibition period, their artistic and documentary value remains intact. The Kim Daljin Art Archive Museum holds about 1,000 art posters created from the 1960s to the present for the promotion of the museum and art exhibitions.
Posters emerged as a major medium in the late 18th century with the invention of lithography technology, which enabled mass printing in a short time. French painter Jules Ch?ret (1836?1932) introduced the first color lithographic poster in 1858. Ch?ret composed posters with simple and flat colors and lines, similar to the pictures and letters that appeared on everyday items or shop signs at the time. This was a significant departure from the three-dimensional chiaroscuro and perspective-based paintings since the Renaissance. Ch?ret's posters greatly influenced artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre Bonnard, and Georges Seurat. Especially painters like Lautrec and Alphonse Mucha, who possessed brilliant colors, bold expressive techniques, and excellent drawing skills, brought posters from the realm of applied arts into the domain of fine arts.

Since the 20th century, with the emergence of various media such as radio, TV, PCs, and smartphones, the influence of posters has diminished compared to before. However, like other classical media, posters have acquired new social and aesthetic meanings and have expanded by differentiating into printmaking and graphic design.
