China's Largest Game Show 'ChinaJoy' Opens on the 31st in Shanghai
Sony, Microsoft (MS), and Mihoyo, among others, did not participate
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] China’s largest game show, 'ChinaJoy 2020,' featuring major game companies such as Tencent, Blizzard, and Ubisoft, will open on the 31st in Shanghai. This is the largest game show in China that is being held despite the cancellation of most international game-related events, including the world’s three major game shows: E3, Gamescom, and Tokyo Game Show, due to the spread of COVID-19.
On the 24th, Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that ChinaJoy 2020 will be held from the 31st of this month to the 3rd of next month at the Shanghai New International Expo Center.
Not only major Chinese game companies like Tencent and Bilibili but also large foreign game companies such as Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, Epic Games, and Bandai Namco are expected to participate. However, reflecting the COVID-19 situation, the scale of the game show will be smaller than in the past, and some companies such as Sony, Microsoft (MS), and miHoYo will not participate.
The ChinaJoy 2020 organizing committee has made wearing masks mandatory at the venue to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Attendees must submit a health status confirmation before entering the venue.
SCMP reported that although ChinaJoy will be held on a reduced scale due to COVID-19, the gaming industry has prospered this year as the number of 'homebody' gamers has increased. Since most game shows were canceled this year, game developers and investors attending this event hope to close as many deals as possible, and the results of the event are expected to be good.
