Korea Railroad Begins Full-Scale Solar Power Project Utilizing Railway Infrastructure
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] Korea Railroad Corporation is set to actively promote a site development project that leases idle railway spaces such as stations and platform roofs to solar power generation operators.
Korea Railroad selected 16 locations nationwide, including the Busan Railway Vehicle Depot, on the 21st as pilot sites for solar power generation utilizing railway infrastructure. The selected sites total an area of 161,829㎡, including rooftops of vehicle maintenance buildings, platform roofs at Mulgeum Station, and rooftop parking lots at Gumi Station. Earlier in March, Korea Railroad signed a business agreement with Korea Rail Network Authority for the "Railway Facility-based Solar Power Generation Site Development Project."
The two organizations plan to finalize a detailed agreement within this month, stipulating that Korea Railroad will be responsible for the utilization plan, operation, and maintenance of the solar power sites, while the Rail Network Authority will handle facility provision and usage approval.
Meanwhile, Korea Railroad has completed patent registration for a construction method to install solar power equipment on railway station platforms and has finished the basic design service for the structure.
